New WAM

Welcome to the new WAM: Revitalizing a Cultural Icon

The City of Turku Art Museum, WAM, is currently undergoing a major renovation that will transform both its function and form.

Originally completed in 1967, this landmark of modern Finnish architecture, designed by the esteemed firm Irma and Matti Aaltonen, holds a significant place in Turku’s urban landscape. As part of the city’s rich cultural heritage along the Aurajoki River, WAM’s renovation is a crucial project that preserves its architectural integrity while modernizing it for future generations. In addition to restoring much of the building’s original interior design, the renovation will introduce a new extension housing essential facilities such as loading bays, maintenance areas, and offices, all discreetly positioned behind the museum. This thoughtful addition ensures the building remains functional without compromising its architectural beauty.

More Room for Culture

One of the most exciting aspects of the project is the expansion of exhibition spaces. By repurposing areas like the riverside office rooms and the former collection storage in the basement, the museum will provide more opportunities to showcase Turku’s rich art collection. This increased space will also allow for a greater variety of cultural activities and exhibitions, offering visitors new ways to engage with the arts.

Preserving the Past, Embracing the Future

Accessibility is at the heart of the project. The renovated building will be fully accessible, ensuring that all visitors can enjoy the museum’s offerings. By respecting the original architectural vision and integrating modern functionality, new WAM will stand as a symbol of Turku’s commitment to both heritage and innovation.
