Hop to Hope – Home alone collective

15/9 – 3/12/2023

The fourth part of the Hop to Hope exhibition series

The Home alone collective consists of photographic artists Adele Hyry (b. 1994) and Emma Sarpaniemi (b. 1993). The artistic duo emphasises the importance of friendship and communication, a sincere approach and having fun.. Portraits and photographs that the artists take of themselves at regular intervals play an important role, and brainstorming taking place during the photography session becomes part of the finished piece.

The project emerged from the communication between the artists while Sarpaniemi was in student exchange in the Netherlands. Since then, they have kept the Home alone collective going alongside their own careers. The works on display in the exhibition have been taken between 2016 and 2022. They are glimpses of everyday life, of two intertwined lives, and of a friendship that provides support even in difficult times. Cooperation and mutual trust also provide an opportunity to test new artistic ideas.

Some of the photos have also been published in the Home alone collective’s two self-published zines, which can be viewed at the exhibition.

The exhibition is part of the exhibition series Hop to Hope, based around the theme of friendship and faith in the future. The Turku Museum Centre invites an international expert to plan a series for the WAMx space on a yearly basis. The 2023 series was designed together with Roos Gortzak, who is the director of the Vleeshal Centre for Contemporary Art in the Netherlands. The series includes artists working in the Netherlands and Finland: Rory Pilgrim, Mounira Al Solh, Iona Roisin, Home alone collective (Emma Sarpaniemi and Adele Hyry) and Afra Eisma.
